The Lagos
State Police Command said that it has arrested over 1110 suspects on various
crimes within its command between December 11, 2015 and January 5, 2016 adding
that notable among the crimes were armed robbery, rape, murder, impersonation
,cultism and child theft.
The State
Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, in his detailed breakdown noted that 47
suspects were arrested for armed robbery, while 14 notorious members of various
cult groups were arrested for murder. He also stated that in the course of
interrogation, 82 arrested persons were released while 1028 were charged to
court accordingly. Out of the number charged to court, 746 were convicted, 155
discharged and 128 are still on awaiting trial list.
The CP
who stated this at a press briefing held in his office, at Ikeja, said that during
an encounter with the police, two armed robbers were shot dead within the
period under review. According to him, 16 guns of different caliber 40 live
ammunition and 24 vehicles were recovered, while a total of 1055 motorcycles
were impounded in the same period.
He
stated further that on December 27, 2015, policemen at Ibeshe Division responded
to a distress call over armed robbery at Ibeshe Beach, and successfully arrested
three of the armed robbers.
On
another account, the Police boss said that on January 2, 2016, Policemen
attached to Deton Division responded to another distress call at Estate Bus Stop,
Ebute Metta, had a gun battle with the four suspects, who had already attacked
a citizen, adding that during the exchange of gun fire, one of the armed
robbery suspects was shot dead.
On yet
another encounter, a father-child-seller was arrested at Agnoroku, Iba town,
Lagos metropolis for allegedly selling his five month old baby boy adding that
the suspect had confessed to selling the baby for N500,000.
On the
impersonation, he said that a suspect, 65-year-old man, was arrested for
impersonating as a Major General of the Nigerian Army attached to the
Presidency, and had successfully siphoned several millions of naira from the
citizens.
Rating
the performance of the command within the period in review, the CP said that
apart from the unprecedented Ketu-saga where a Mobile Policeman after shooting three
individuals dead also killed himself, there was drastic reduction of robbery
during the Yuletide, promising that the Command will continue to provide
security to lives and properties which is its core statutory duty.
