The Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwumi Ambode has signed into law a
bill converting the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo to a residential institution
and reviewing the existing retirement age for professors of the university from
65 years to 70 years.
In the same vein, the bill known as LASU (Amendment) Bill 2005)
also approved a five-year single term for the Vice Chancellor of the
institution.
Signing the bill into law, the governor said the amended law is
aimed at positioning the institution to its desirable position in the education
sector adding that it is a priority of his government to rebuild the institution
to a world class standard that would become enviable in the recent time. He
added that in the few days time, visible laudable changes would begin in the
university.
Similarly, the Deputy Speaker of the Lagosn State House of
Assembly, Wasiu Eshiniokun-Sanni applauded the development stating that the
amendment became necessary following the recent crises that characterized the
tenure of the Professor John Obafunwa as the Vice Chancellor of the University
as well as the need to convert the university to a residential institution as
against what existed until now.
It would be recalled that the institution witnessed a fierce battle
between the university’s Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and the immediate-past
Vice Chancellor over demands for the school to adopt a 70 year retirement age
for professors and single term of five years for Vice Chancellors.
On the new residential status of the university, he stated that
with the signing the bill into law, the state government has proactively prevented
persistent clashes in the near future between the students of the university
and the neighbouring Iba residents and other communities, hence, a strategic
protective measure towards eradicating future clashes.
