The Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Amechi has ordered for
a comprehensive audit of contracts awarded in the Nigerian Maritime
Administration and Safety Management Agency, NIMASA since the establishment of
the agency.
Amechi disclosed this at his familiarization tour on the
agency, Nigerian Ports Authority and Nigerian Shippers Council in Lagos on
Monday. The Minister explicitly registered his disappointment over some
inadequacies in NIMASA. At the Nigerian Ports Authority headquarters in Marina,
the Minister was amiably received by the management team led by its managing
Director, Mallam Habib Abdullahi.
Furiously, he stated, “I have asked the Director of Finance for the records of all contracts awarded since the establishment of NIMASA. Everywhere is unkempt. One wonders where all the billions of naira spent by NIMASA went.”

The Minister also didn’t mince words to criticize the
monumental inadequacies in the operation of the agency particularly, the search
and rescue facilities which he emphatically stated are part of the basic object
of the agency, hence inevitable. He said, “I cannot see any search and rescue
equipment. Perhaps, it is kept on the water”.
He impliedly added that the era of triviality and laxity is gone in all
public service essentially in highly sensitive agency like NIMASA.
