INSPECTOR General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase has
issued a directive for audit of the Police armouries in the Police units across
the nation stating that the action was aimed at determining weapons that have
become obsolete and weak for the task of securing lives and properties.
Arase stated this in Uyo on Wednesday during his visit
to the Akwa Ibom State Command adding that police officers should be adequately
equipped towards optimal service delivery as well as securing their own lives.
“If I am an accountant and I am careless, I will lose
money, but if you are a police officer, if you are careless with your men, you
will lose lives and that is the difference.
“If you have 30 rounds of ammunition and you cork it,
(gun) and it does not fire and you are facing criminals, it means you are going
to be killed.
“We are going to take care of that. The entire
armouries should check their ammunition to see that they are not expired, so
that they would not jeopardize the lives of our officers while on duty. This is
a national thing; I am directing all armouries in all Commands to update their
armouries”, Arase said.
The Police boss also assured that the Force will
continue to carry on its statutory duties in line with the conventional norms
particularly ensuring that a cordial relationship between it and members of the
public are healthy at all times.
He added that the notion that ‘Police is your friend’
is not a myth assuring that the Force will apply any practical means to
actualize the perception with the general public.
