Mr Akinwumi
Ambode, the governor of Lagos has inaugurated the new board of Lagos State
Law Reform Commission (LSLRC) on Wednesday, adding that such periodic review
was important in achieving the goal of creating an enabling environment for
investors, entrepreneurs and making the state globally competitive. He
however, assured that his administration will uphold the rule of law and deepen
democracy, especially by carrying out prompt periodic review of obsolete laws
to bring them in tune with current realities for relevance and effectiveness.
The
governor who during the inauguration charged the members to always make the overall
interest of the state their priority, also reminded them on the statutory role
of LSLRC of facilitating the process of reviewing the state laws with a view
to making appropriate recommendations for laws in the state.
He
categorically stated that since the creation few years ago, the commission had
made enviable progress and therefore enjoined them to follow suit noting that conventionally,
laws are periodically reviewed to meet up with the society which is usually
dynamic in nature, hence the need to review it as the society changes to avoid
having laws that are obsolete and ‘unjusticiable’. He further charged newly inaugurated
board to expedite action on the creation of electronic portal, which will
provide access to the laws of the state online from anywhere in the world as
obtainable in other mega cities around the world.
The
commission has Prof. Gbolahan Ellias (SAN) as Chairman, Mrs, Ade Adeyemo;
Secretary while members are Dr. Omogbai Omo-Eboh, Mr. Ademola Kamar Adisa
Sadiq, Mrs. Adeshola Williams and Mrs. Tola Akinsanya.
“This
is a major project which the new board has the responsibility to deliver in
record time because it is very vital to the success of our drive to attract
investors to our state.
“Members
of the board have been carefully selected based on merit, experience and
knowledge of the law. I, therefore, have absolute confidence in your ability to
deliver on the commission’s mandate. I look forward to your recommendations and
inputs from consultations with stakeholders,” the governor said.
It
would be recalled that the former board, inaugurated on March 12, 2012 was dissolved
on June 15, 2015 by the state governor in accordance with the provision of the
law establishing the commission, as amended in 2012.
