THE SENATE on Tuesday ordered the Attorney
General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami to
appear before it over the justification of his action for determinedly
prosecuting the Senate President Bukola Saraki and Deputy Senate President Ike
Ekweremadu to court over alleged forgery.
Following the development, Saraki,
Ekweremadu and two others were arraigned at a Federal High Court, Abuja on
Monday to answer charges of alleged forgery of 2015 Standing Rule of the
Senate.
The Senate’s resolution was
triggered by a motion by Senator Dino Melaye, (Kogi West) entitled “imminent
threat to our democracy” arguing that earlier, Justice Gabriel Kolawole of
Abuja High Court had adjudicated and ruled on the matter affirming that the
issue is an internal affair of the Senate...
The resolution to appear before the
Senate was communicated to the AGF and Minister of Justice demanding his presence
at the upper chamber on Thursday to explain why dragging Senators to the court
of law through a letter referenced NASSIS/CJHL/024/2016/10 dated 27th June
issued from the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
