Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentence By Hanging On Rev. King

Supreme Court of Nigeria
Supreme Court of Nigeria this afternoon had upheld the death sentence passed on the General Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly, Rev. Kings Chukwuemeka Ezeugo who was contending that judgment of the Lagos High Court was erroneous and therefore urged the apex court to set it aside.

The apex court had adjourned to today to give its ruling after taking submissions from both parties. The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem who appeared with the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP had urged the apex court to dismiss the appeal filed by the appellant who remained recalcitrant pleading guilty to the six-count charge over the death of some members of his church in 2006 at Ajao Estate environs in Lagos.

The Lagos State government has maintained its position that the church leader deliberately poured fuel on the victims and burnt some of them to death which was also consistent with the ruling of the trial court and the Court of Appeal that adjudicated on the matter leading to its final journey to the apex court.

In dismissing the appeal at the Court of Appeal earlier, Justice Fatimo Akinbami who read the judgment stated, ‘the judgment of the High Court is hereby affirmed, and the conviction imposed on the appellant (which is death by hanging) is also affirmed”.

  1. This judgment brings an end to this unfortunate saga. There are abundant lessons for Nigerians and other 'men of God' like Rev king to learn from it. Only God knows those who truly love and serve him. May the soul of those who died on the instruction of Rev. King rest in peace.

I seize this opportunity to thank the prosecuting team from the Lagos State Ministry of Justice for the uncommon professionalism and courage displayed in the pursuit of justice for the families of the victims. Indeed, this case confirms that nobody is above the law. For those who are still acting as if they are untouchable, no matter whatever evil they do to others, the day of reckoning is coming soon.- Prince B.C. Onuora
