NIGERIANS resident in South Africa have staged
a peaceful protest at the Nigeria High Commission against the incessant killings
and attacks by the Fulani Herdsmen leading to displacements of many citizens
and called for improved security in the country.
The group protesting under the umbrella of
“Save Our Democracy”, a non-government organization, (NGO) frowned at the
recent ugly situations in the country where a group of persons armed with
lethal weapons always attack innocent citizens at night and slaughter humans as
animals without any reason.
The group’s Coordinator, Ms Oluchi Odimegwu passionately
appealed to the Federal Government to wake up to its responsibilities of protecting
lives and property which it noted is the primary purpose of government adding
that cases of insecurity in some parts of the country have demanded for urgent
proactive interventions.
Odimegwu also blamed the governments over the
years for high rate of neglect, unemployment and joblessness in the country
which she said contributed largely to such vices, and therefore pleaded to the
present administration to distinguish itself from the previous administrations which
failed to create jobs for the youths.
“We are worried about the killings and it is
really traumatising to Nigerians living in South Africa. We want the High Commission
to send our message to
the Federal Government.
“We are trying our best to ensure that there is
peace in our country. We urge the federal government to intervene and stop such
attacks.
“When our youths have jobs, they will be busy
and not many will think of leaving the country.’’
Similarly, a member of the NGO, Mr Trust
Owoyele, commended the federal government for directing security agencies to
secure all communities under attack.
“This is a welcome development and it will give
the people a sense of belonging. Government should create an enabling environment to attract
investment into the country,” he said. (NAN)
