Senate Pegs Death Penalty On Kidnapping

The Senate on Wednesday considered a report of a special committee headed by Senator Abu Ibrahim ( APC Katsina South) which was mandated to look into the increasing incidents of kidnapping and other related crimes in the country and proffer viable recommendations to the Senate.
 
In a plenary session presided by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Sen. Adamu Aliero (APC-Kebbi Central) moved for the adoption of death penalty for kidnappers and it was unanimously adopted by the Senators but added that the funding of the security agencies should be improved upon to enable all the security apparatus  discharge its duties unhindered. It furthermore urged various state legislative bodies to take the queue without delay.
“The funding of the security agencies should be taken as a priority project, bearing in mind that the practice of envelop budget for security agencies have proved ineffective with synergy and intelligence sharing among security agencies vigorously pursued”.
In addition, the upper legislative chamber noted that the alarming rate of unemployment and poverty contribute largely to increment of the number of youths indulged in crimes particularly kidnapping.
“Efforts should be geared towards creating employment opportunities for our teeming unemployed youths and security agencies should embark on training and retraining of their personnel for effective capacity building. State governments to enact laws to enable security agencies to prosecute kidnappers and other crime related offences in their jurisdictions”, the Senate said.
