The Senate on Wednesday considered
a report of a special committee headed by Senator Abu Ibrahim ( APC Katsina
South) which was mandated to look into the increasing incidents of kidnapping
and other related crimes in the country and proffer viable recommendations to
the Senate.
In a plenary session presided by the Senate
President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Sen. Adamu Aliero (APC-Kebbi Central) moved for
the adoption of death penalty for kidnappers and it was unanimously adopted by
the Senators but added that the funding of the security agencies should be
improved upon to enable all the security apparatus discharge its duties unhindered. It
furthermore urged various state legislative bodies to take the queue without
delay.
“The funding of the security agencies should be
taken as a priority project, bearing in mind that the practice of envelop
budget for security agencies have proved ineffective with synergy and
intelligence sharing among security agencies vigorously pursued”.
In addition, the upper legislative chamber noted
that the alarming rate of unemployment and poverty contribute largely to
increment of the number of youths indulged in crimes particularly kidnapping.
“Efforts should be geared towards creating
employment opportunities for our teeming unemployed youths and security
agencies should embark on training and retraining of their personnel for
effective capacity building. State governments to enact laws to enable security
agencies to prosecute kidnappers and other crime related offences in their
jurisdictions”, the Senate said.
