Nigerians, Afenifere Mourns Braithwaite

Tunde Braithwaite
AFENIFERE, a Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization has mourned the death of Dr Tunji Braithwaite who died yesterday at the age of 82, at St. Nicholas hospital, Lagos describing him as an resourceful political leader and social activist in the country.

In a statement signed by Mr Yinka Odumakin, National Publicity Secretary of the group, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, it stated that Braithwaite was remarkably a voice for the oppressed, and incontrovertibly known for his principled stance on national issues and consistent defence of the rights of the downtrodden in Nigeria throughout his lifetime.

“His last major outing was his membership of the 2014 National Conference where he stoutly canvassed a confederal arrangement as the best constitutional order for Nigeria.
“His death has brought a closure to a rich era of political sagacity and social crusading. He would always be remembered for his consistency, tenacity and intellectual fecundity. “It is our prayer that God Almighty will protect the family he has left behind. “May his great soul rest in perfect peace,” it stated.

Braithwaite was the founder of the Nigerian Advance Party, NAP and later a delegate at the 2014 National Conference, in which he concertedly canvassed for a Confederal Constitution to replace the 1999 Constitution. He described the 1999 Constitution as Decree 24 which was presently destroying Nigeria and Nigerians, stressed that it should be thrown out and be replaced with either a Confederal constitution, with Nigeria operating con-federalism or a very loose federation.

Reacting to his demise, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in a statement issued in Abuja by his media adviser, Mr. Garba Shehu, said he regrets the passing away of the lawyer, politician at a time when his wisdom, and experiences were earnestly needed by the country.
He however prayed that God grant his soul eternal rest.
