FEDERAL Government of Nigeria has recommended a former Group
Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC),
Mohammed Barkindo for the position of Secretary-General of the Organisation of
Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to succeed Abdalla El-Badri who was due in
office in 2012 however got extension of office to July 2016.
The federal government nominee led the NNPC till 2010 and
also served as acting Secretary-General of OPEC in 2006 as well as serving as
the country’s representative in the organization.
Opinion polls at the moment seemingly stand in favour of the
federal government nominee following his experiences and in-depth understanding
of the system at OPEC having satisfactorily occupied the position albeit on
acting capacity.
According to the assessment by the Wall Street Journal, the
succeeding OPEC boss was likely to come either from Indonesia, Nigeria or
Angola due to the neutrality the three countries displayed during the
disagreement that almost reduced the group to dismemberments.
