CORRUPTION: FG Discovers 23,000 Ghost Workers On Monthly Payroll

Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, Finance Minister
FINANCE Minister, Kemi Adeosun disclosed on Thursday that the ministry has discovered that 23,000 ghost workers were over the years placed on monthly salaries and other entitlements in the Federal Civil Service of the federation.

The Minister stated this during a 2016 budget defence session at the National Assembly adding that all the culprits which she said includes banks that facilitated the fake transactions would be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC for prosecution in the court of law. In her remarks, she applauded the eventual introduction of the BVN stating that it has immensely assisted in checkmating fraud in the civil service.

“What the IPPIS-BVN registration has shown us has been a real revelation. We will try as much as possible to conclude that investigation within 30 days so that innocent people do not suffer, but we really need to clean our payroll.
“As we speak now, we have about 23,000 that we need to investigate.  Those whom either the BVN account is linked to multiple payment or the name on the BVN account not consistent with the name on our payroll.

“If we are able to get everybody onto the BVN platform, we will be able to save a considerable amount of personnel cost. Not only will we remove those people from our payroll, but we will also be going after the banks involved to collect our money,” she said.
However, she noted that her duty is to dislodge the arrangements from the payroll and the forward the reports to the security agencies for necessary actions.

“My job is to get them off our payroll, what happens from there on goes to the investigative agencies; we will pass our files onto them and they will take a decision as to what sanctions they will take,” Adeosun clarified.

Responding, the Chairman of the Senate committee on Finance, Senator John Eno vehemently frowned at the development and urged the minister to ensure that the culprits are not only removed from the payroll but made to face the wrath of the law.
