The Lagos state governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode has reiterated
his position that the coming year, 2016 will put smiles to the faces of
residents and indigenes of the state irrespective of the negative signals following
his administration’s concerted efforts to implement people oriented-policies
and programmes in the state.
The
governor stated this at the Christmas eve dance organized by the Island Club in
the state hinting that the passage and implementation of the N662.58 billion budget
for 2016 would inevitably spark off rapid transformation across the state
adding that his government is working assiduously towards adopting e-governance
as a means of making government accessible to all and sundry.
He
said, “The indicators for 2016 are not encouraging but we are very confident
that our state will record significant progress. We have had several good meetings with
investors who are keen to come and do business in the state.”
Ambode
who stated that the allocations from the federation account has continuously been
on the decline implored the residents to take their civil responsibilities
seriously by paying taxes as at when due. He added that his government would be
transparent, accountable and judicious in all its spending. “The revenue
derived from the federal allocation has been on the decline and is expected to
decline further”, he noted.
The
governor also affirmed that while the signals point to depression and
uncertainties in 2016, his administration has strategically taken note of that,
hence working towards making landmark achievements amidst the ugly situation.
“So
while, the indicators say that there will be less revenue, inflation and job
cuts, we are quietly confident about 2016. We are inspired to face the
challenges and prepared to maximize the opportunities that will unfold,” he
said.
He
empathetically added that his foresight led to the reduction of the cost on
governance which was the first action he embarked upon on assumption of office
through prudent management and reforms.
In
his vote of thanks, he poured encomium on the club noting that its contribution
to the development of the state cannot be overemphasized, and also sought for its
continued cooperation, understanding and support to his government.
“As we
look forward to the challenges of 2016, I can confidently say that many of the
people who will shape the year are seated here. As
a well-respected body comprising eminent and distinguished Lagosians, I am
aware that the prosperity and progress of Lagos State is your concern. It is also my concern and priority
because that is the assignment I have been given by the good people of this
state. Together, we will make this happen,” the governor concluded assertively.
