SOUTH AFRICA: President Zuma Apologises, Accepts Court Ruling

President Jacob Zuma
PRESIDENT of South Africa, Mr. Jacob Zuma has apologized to the people of South Africa over his misuse of the state resources to renovate his private home in which the country’s Constitutional Court ordered him to refund on Thursday.

Earlier, the country’s National Assembly in its finding/investigations exonerated the President of violation of the laws leading the opposition parties to file two cases alleging abuse of office and misuse of public funds by the President.

In the ruling by the 11 Justices of the apex court, it was unanimously ruled that the President having arbitrarily spent state resources without due process in line with the country’s constitution should reimburse the fund utilized for the purpose adding that President Zuma failed to uphold, defend and respect the constitution, as the supreme law o the land.

Following the ruling, the SA government in a statement acknowledged the court’s verdict and assured that the President having regards to the laws of the land will respect the order of the court.

“The President will reflect on the judgment and its implications on the state and government, and will in consultation with other impacted institutions of state, determine the appropriate action”, a statement said.

The Constitutional Court vehemently held that the National Assembly erred by exonerating the President from the allegation and therefore set aside its decisions on the matter.

“The court thus held that the National Assembly’s resolution, based on the minister’s findings exonerating the President from liability was inconsistent with the Constitution and therefore unlawful”, the court said.
