The Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed
Idris, on Tuesday explained the factors responsible for the delays in
disclosing the amounts recovered from the treasury looters and urged citizens to
exercise patience until the prosecutions are over in line with the conventional
norms.
The Accountant-General spoke in view of the public
eagerness to know the exact amount recovered so far stating that the figures
will be in the public domain after the prosecution adding that until the court releases
a legal order declaring that the funds belong to the treasury, no one else
could do it.
Emphatically, Idris, who was responding to
questions at the monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting
in Abuja admitted that federal government has truly been recovering money from treasury looters,
however stated that though the money evidently belongs to the country based on
the investigations, nevertheless, the government requires order of the court to
appropriate it, hence cannot disclose it until the matter is discharged in the
courts.
However, the accountant-General noted that citizens were
right to know but should exercise patience to avoid getting wrong information
adding that the exact amount will be disclosed as court makes a judicial
pronouncements on them which automatically records them in the court registrar
too.
On the details of the February allocation, the
Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance, Dr. Mahmud Isa-Dutse, said
the gross statutory revenue of N270.499 billion received for the month was
lower than the N290.961 billion received in the previous month by N20.462
billion.
He said the distributable statutory revenue was N270.499
billion, adding that the sum of N6.330 billion was refunded by the NNPC to the
federal government.
“Also, there is an exchange gain of N3.485 billion which is
proposed. The total distributable for the current month, including CAT is
N345.085 billion,” he said.
