FEDERAL High Court sitting in Abuja has
restrained the Senate and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase,
from arresting the former Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,
EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, over his alleged complicity in N1trillion scam.
Justice Gabriel Kolawole on ex-parte
motion Lamorde filed before the court through his lawyer, Mr. Festus Ukpue
dated March 7,prayed the court to stop the Senate from issuing a warrant for
his arrest, pending the hearing and determination of a substantive suit he filed
before it.
Lamorde was earlier summoned by the
Senate to account for funds the EFCC, under his leadership, recovered from some
suspects believed to have been diverted to private pockets as no traces of the
loots reflected in the government treasury.
Justice Kolawole, after listening to the ex-parte motion, granted his prayers and ordered the inspector general of
Police and Senate to suspend further action on the accused pending when the
court discharges a substantive suit the applicant filed before it.
“A limited order of injunction is
hereby granted to restrain the defendants, pending when they are heard on the
reply to the plaintiff’s motion on notice. That the plaintiff’s counsel is
hereby directed to obtain a certified true copy of the order in this ruling,
and cause same to be served on the Inspector General of Police”, Kolawole said.
It will be recalled that following the allegation that the looted funds recovered from public officeholders were not accounted for, the Senate moved to probe the former anti-graft boss, and immediately
invited Lamorde to appear before it to account on the loots EFCC recovered
from suspects during his tenure. The former EFCC boss reportedly went into
hiding and approached the court through his lawyer for an injunction
restraining the lawmakers and the Police from probing or arresting him.
