SENATE on Thursday
adopted a motion to commence investigation on the alleged unwholesome practices
by the South-African’s Multichoice Nigeria, owners of the
Digital Satellite Television (DSTV) television.
In a motion moved by
Senator Isah Hamma Misau in its plenary, the distinguished senator informed the
upper legislative chamber that Multichoice, owner of DSTV has been taking
advantage of its domineering influence in the Nigerian satellite television market
to intimidate its customers through unwholesome trade practices adding that
several customers who have the wherewithal are in court challenging those some
of the anomalies.
Following this
development, the Senate immediately directed its Committees on Information,
Trade and Investment to carry on investigation and report back to it within
four weeks adding that expectedly, it should consider summoning the Nigeria
Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) so as
to get adequate information on it.
The Committee is also
mandated to organize a public hearing for all the stakeholders so as to arrive
at practicable resolutions.
Supporting
the motion, Deputy Senate Leader, Ibn Na’Allah stated that the essence of the
motion is to checkmate the unbearable intimidations against Nigerians through
frivolous charges by the firm.
“People
must not be allowed to take what is not due to them irrespective of where they
operate, people must operate within the laws of the country and Nigerians must
be protected on the way and manner people operate their business in this
country”, he stated.
