LAGOS: Seven Confirmed Dead, Four Rescued, Others Missing In Boat Mishap

A total of nineteen persons including two crew members who boarded a boat in Ikorodu enroute Badore in Lekki on Saturday ran into a tragedy as the boat collided at a dredging point in Ijede leaving seven passengers stone death, four others injured while eight were missing.   
Similar incidents had occurred a forth night ago involving two commercial boats which also suffered a sudden collision. The latest incident occurred in the morning not quite long after the end of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state which ends at 10.00am on last Saturdays.
The General Manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, Mr. Micheal Akindele, who confirmed the incident stated that on the receipt of emergency call, his agency embarked on joint rescue operations immediately together with the Lagos State Waterways Authority, Marine Police, National Inland Water Ways Authority, Lagos State Fire Service and local divers.
According to him, the boat belongs to Aki Marine, a private operator, and had 17 passengers and two crew members on board at the time of the mishap adding that those rescued were immediately rushed to Ijede General Hospital for treatment.
At the time of filing this report, it was discovered that those rushed to the hospital were responding to treatments while the copses of the seven passengers were moved to the mogue accordingly.
 “Though, we are still expecting the boat manifest, rescue operation is ongoing while further investigation would be carried out by the appropriate agencies to ascertain the actual cause of the accident,” Akindele stated.
