PRESIDENT
Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of his Special Adviser on
Planning, Mr. Ben Akabueze, as the
new Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and
Publicity to the President, Mr. Femi Adesina, Akabueze takes over from Mr.
Tijani Mohammed Abdullahi who would now serve as Special Adviser to the
President on Planning and would continue to work with the Minister of
Budget and National Planning, adding that the redeployment which takes immediate
effect is aimed at further reposition the Ministry due to its overriding value
to the nation.
“Their
redeployment is part of an ongoing exercise aimed at further repositioning the
Ministry to effectively deliver on its core mandate,” Adesina said.
It will be recalled that both Akabueze and Abdullahi joined the
Ministry of Budget and National Planning in February this year amidst
controversies over padding of the nation's budget which led to unprecendented delays in passage of the
2016 Appropriation budget.
Akabueze,
a fellow of the Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) was deployed from NAL Merchant Bank where he was the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer to serve as
Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning in Lagos State first in the
administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and later retained on the same position
for the two consecutive administration of Mr. Babatunde Fashola which winded up
on May 29, 2015.
In addition, Akabueze is a Fellow Institute of
Credit Administrators (FCA) and an Honorary Member, Chartered Institute of
Bankers (CIBN), AND holds a first class B.Sc degree in Accounting from the
University of Lagos. He is an Alumnus of the prestigious Lagos Business School and hails from Dunukofia in Anambra state.
