INSPECTOR General
of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase has deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of
Police, (Operations), Sontoye Wakama to Rivers State in view of the election
slated to hold on Saturday 19, 2016.
According to
a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by the Force Spokesperson, Olabisi
Kolawole the IGP directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of
Department of Operations, to immediately proceed to the state with a view of
ensuring that the forthcoming election is conducted without any form of hitches
from any quarters.
Other senior
officers affected in the interim redeployment are the Assistant Inspector
General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 6 Calabar, Adisa Baba Bolanta and three
Commissioners of Police (CPs) for the three senatorial districts to take responsibilities
in their area of assignment. The three Senatorial Districts are; Rivers East,
Rivers West and Rivers South East.
In addition
to the senior officers, no fewer than 6000 Policemen and 14 Units of Police
Mobile Force personnel (MOPOL), would be deployed to compliment the personnel
of Rivers State Command throughout the election.
Emphatically,
the IGP assured the electorates of peaceful elections adding that his men are
competent to deal with anyone who may wish to create confusion in the entire
state.
Speaking
further, the Police boss cautioned all the security agencies to discharge their
duties according to the ethics of the profession and frowned over the usual
developments where security agents accompany their principals and politicians
to polling booths and collation centres during the election which had cases of
intimidations, concluding that only security personnel assigned for the
elections should be seen during the elections.
Confirming the development, the
Minister of Transport, Mr Rotimi Amechi on Saturday stated that the election
will be free and fair noting that the Police has taken adequate measures
towards ensuring that no one frustrates the policy of President Mohammed Buhari
on free and fair election. He overtly called on those who have been given
weapon for troubles to be ready to face the consequences as the law enforcement
agencies are prepared to deal decisively with anyone attempting to foment
troubles during the elections.
