PRESIDENT Mohammadu Buhari on Tuesday urged the government of
South Sudan to avoid the miscalculation made by Nigeria through the country’s
reliance on oil as its exclusive source of revenue leading to the present
economic crisis the country is undergoing.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity,
Femi Adesina, the President made this call while receiving the outgoing South
Sudan Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Makuet Riak, at the Presidential Villa,
Abuja adding that Nigeria and South Sudan had maintained a remarkable relationship
over the years, and therefore assured that his administration will take the
cordial relationship to a new echelon.
On his step towards redressing the mistake of the country on
its dependence on oil, the President said his administration is assiduously
working towards diversifying the economy to agriculture and mining, and call
for citizens’ supports and understanding as this policy undergoes
implementation.
“Investing in sustainable agriculture is one of the best ways
to provide jobs for the people and keep the nation productive. Food security is
important to any country and that is what we are trying to achieve here. Years
after we threw away agriculture for the oil”, the President said.
