The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Lagos State
Chapter has called for the prosecution of former President Goodluck Jonathan
over corruption while in office.
The Chairman of the Chapter, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola who
spoke after an interdenominational service in Lagos hailed the present war
against corruption in the country stating that no one should be spared.
He emphatically calls for the prosecution of Jonathan against
the parochial views on the contrary adding that several former Presidents have
been prosecuted and jailed in other countries on account of abuse of office.
“What is wrong with it? A former President of Peru (Alberto
Fujimori) was jailed. Also a popular Prime Minister of Israel (Ehud Olmert) was
jailed. If a nation puts you in a position of trust and you betray that trust,
you should go to jail no matter who you are. I have no sympathy for anybody.
Just make sure you get it right, and we get the facts right as well,” Bamgbola said.
Apart from the guest speaker, Professor Joseph Otubu who
spoke on a topic,”Great Faith, the Antidote to Helplessness”; the Lagos State governor ably represented by
the Commissioner for Women Affair and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Lola Akande as
well as Senator Gbenga Ashafa, Senator representing Lagos-East Senatorial
District in the National Assembly also spoke on the need to have a conducive
society.
Senator Ashafa also highlighted on the activities in the
National Assembly particularly the contentious 2016 Appropriation Budget
stating that the Senate would do everything within its capacity to ensure that
the budget is passed accordingly.
“The Presidency will re-present the budget. I appeal to
Nigerians to be patient as everything will be to the benefit of the country,”
he said.
It would be recalled that similar abuse of office manifested
itself during the administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo including the
raising of over N2 billion for his personal Presidential Library. In the same
vein, the present revelations on indiscriminate diversion of public fund has
linked an elder statesman from the geopolitical zone, Chief Olu Falae to the
tune of N100 million which he admitted but openly said he would not return the
money. Despite his admission, he seemed to be ignored as if there are sacred
cows in the country.
