FCT: Police Foils Gay Wedding In Abuja

Same Sex Marriage
The Federal Capital Police Command on Saturday disrupted a gay marriage wedding slated to hold in a hotel in Jiwa Community of Abuja.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the Command, ASP Anjuguri Manzah, the Police swung into action immediately to disrupt the activities on alert that the event was scheduled to take place at the venue on that day adding that it amounts to a criminal offence in Nigeria.
“We acted based on the provisions of the Same Sex Prohibition Act signed into law on 2013.
“We received an intelligence report and acted fast by moving to the venue of the event to stop it.
He however gave the names of the culprits as Mr. Ibrahim Lawal who took the role of a husband while Mr. Umar Tahir disguises as the wife adding that as soon as the Police is through with the investigation, the suspects alongside all others arrested at the venue of the event would be charged to the court for prosecution accordingly.

It would be recalled that in 2013, the erstwhile President Goodluck Jonathan signed into law the Same Sex Prohibition Act against marriage of the same sex.
The Acts reads, “ a marriage contract or civil union entered into between persons of same sex; (a) is prohibited in Nigeria; and (b) shall not be recognized as entitled to the benefits of a valid marriage.

“A person who enters into  a same sex marriage contract or civil union commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 14 years imprisonment.”
