| President Buhari and the Acting-President, Yemi Osinbajo |
President Mohammadu Buhari has today proceeded on a short leave
leaving all his statutory duties as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria to his Vice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo who becomes
the Acting President till further notice.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media
and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina stated that while the President starts a short
leave today 5th February to 10th February, the Vice
President will perform all the functions of the President.
Pursuant to the statute, the President has filed a formal notice of
leave to the National Assembly addressed to the President of the Senate and
Speaker, House of the Representatives in compliance to Section 145 of the 1999
Constitution accordingly:
145 “Whenever the
President transmits to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House
of Representatives a written declaration that he is proceeding on vacation or
that he is otherwise unable to discharge the functions of his office, until he
transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary such functions shall be
discharged by the Vice-President as Acting President.”
Remarkably, the Presidency has through this development proved
that a cordial relationship exists between the President and the Vice President
as against the rumours indicating that the Vice President has been sidelined
and schemed out of things. Indeed, this is attestation that the present
leadership is poised to laying a legacy that would stand a test of time. The
President is therefore wished a happy vacation.
