A former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has berated the
leadership class in the country over selfishness and insensitivity, and specifically
blamed them over the present perplexed state of the country irrespective of the
abundance resources.
The former President stated this during a courtesy call by a
delegation of the Scouts Association of Nigeria at his Presidential Hilltop
Boulevard, Abeokuta which also decorated him as the Messenger of Peace
Ambassador for Africa.
Obasanjo noted that Nigeria is overwhelmingly endowed with
abundant resources and therefore ought not to be at its present position in the
scheme of things if not selfishness on the part of the leaders who had recklessly
mismanaged the nation’s plethora of resources atn the expense of the poor
masses.
He categorically enjoined leaders to always put the overall interest of
the nation first instead of the usual self-centeredness at the detriment of the
nation’s growth adding that no nation of the world grows to enviable heights
without sacrifices on the part of its leaders.
Obasanjo, who recalled his earlier decoration in the past as
Queen’s Scout acknowledged that the country is presently passing through some
challenges, however said that such challenges are part of life adding that all
that is required is to imbibe a persevering spirit which he said characterized the
Scouts.
“We need
a Scout spirit in our country not just for individual benefit alone but also
for services to the nation to work collectively and provide the leadership that
will make us get progress for all eventualities”, he emphatically said.
Obasanjo also
assured the delegation that he would facilitate for President Mohammadu Buhari’s
decoration in line with the constitution of the association as the Grand Paton.
While expressing gratitude to the former President for hospitality, the Chief Commissioner
of Scouts, Olusoga
Sofola-Atibioke stated that the investiture on the former President would
without doubt, take the association to enviable height particularly “help to build
a peaceful and formidable Africa with special focus on Nigeria.
