The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has
refuted the allegation that its operations have been characterized by monumental
disobedience of court orders which it admitted is as dangerous as the crimes it
is doggedly fighting against.
The chairman of the
Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu told journalists in Abuja that EFCC as a statutory
body is a creation of the law, hence has no intention to operate above the law
that established it adding that the intense fight against corruption which the
organization spearheads is not about him or but for the collective interests of
the entire citizens.
“We have never had any reason to disobey court orders and
will not disobey court orders. It is not about me, it is about the desire to
move this country forward,” Magu said.
The anti-graft agency boss reacted in view of public complaints
which have trailed the agency recently particularly after the Presidential
Media Chat indicating that the Federal government is seemingly above the law.
Oppositions have intensively accused the EFCC of implementing the directives
and orders of the President and confidently refusing to abide by the decisions
of the court when unfavourable to it.
It would be recalled that the President in response to
government’s continued detention of some suspects under investigation of
various crimes despite order of the courts which had released them on bail, stated
that anyone within the category would only be released on his satisfaction that
he would not jump bail. The statement apparently generated heated up the polity
with criticisms from diverse quarters particularly from oppositions. The Bar
and other civil rights groups albeit frowned at the position, however,
virtually all of them clearly aligned with the President that the fight against
corruption must be fought doggedly for it to succeed.
