PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari's daughter, Halima, was among the 2, 219 law graduates called
to Bar on Thursday at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja.
The
Chairman, Body of Benchers, Chief Bandele Aiku (SAN) presided over charged them
to add values to the legal profession adding that to be a successful lawyer
goes beyond passing classroom examinations but good conducts and professional ethics.
“A
legal practitioner is not only an officer of the court performing duties as
such but holds a position of trust and confidence among members of the
community.
“He
is therefore subjected to a code of conduct known as the basic traditions of
the profession, which are written and unwritten, the greater part being
unwritten...
“This
is because of the variation of circumstances which are different in times and
places.
“After
more than 50 years of active practice of law in Nigeria, I am satisfied that
success at the Bar demands more than distinction in law examinations. It
demands of correct behavious, true and proper professional spirit and proper
understanding and wise use of the tools of the craft”, Aiku said.
Eulogizing
the octogenarian, Pius Chuka Enebeli for his willpower to make the list at such
an old age, the Director-General, Nigerian Law School (NLS), Olanrewaju
Onadeko, said he has today made a history in the legal profession. He equally congratulated
all the new wigs and wished them a successful career in the legal profession.
“Let
me also congratulate one of the new wigs, who is making his history in his own
right, by being the oldest new wig ever produced by the Nigerian Law School. He
is 80 years old and we wish him a very successful career at the bar”, Onadeko
said.
