The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission
(NERC) has expressed its disappointment against the Power Distribution companies
(DISCOs) as thousands of complaints lodged by electricity customers against the
11 electricity distribution companies (Discos) in the last quarter of 2015
filled its offices.
The acting Chief Executive Officer of NERC, Dr.
Anthony Akah, while declaring open a training session on customer complaints
handling organised for staff of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company
(AEDC), in Keffi, Nassarawa State, said that the distribution companies must assiduously
improve against receiving such a volume of complaints ahead of the next audit
period noting that it is indicative of inefficiency.
“It is critical that electricity distribution
companies should be alive to their duties of prompt resolution of complaints to
ensure improved customer service satisfaction. This will not only win the
confidence of the customers for their service provider but also allow customers
to benefit from gain of the privatisation of the power sector”, he said.
However, Akah, was represented by his Technical
Assistant, Jonathan Okoronkwo. The Assistant General Manager, Customer
Complaint in the NERC, Mr. Shittu Shaibu who was among the resource persons at
the training, also charged the DISCOs to always adhere to the guidelines
particularly on connection, disconnection and reconnection issued to them in dealing
with their customers warning that the regulatory body cannot sit and allow electricity
consumers be treated arbitrarily without regard to the set guidelines.
